Recently, an enterprising young man named Trevor volunteered at the Clear Lake Area Community Center (CLACC) to help get some projects done. Trevor is a conscientious guy who is as invested in working hard as he is in giving back. He didn't have to ask twice; we jumped at the chance to get some much-needed improvements done, and we could not be more pleased with the outcome. I hope you'll join me in thanking Trevor for all his hard work!
First, we installed carpeting in the Event Center entryway where the old tile had broken and come up. Epoxy was installed on top of it, but that soon cracked and was removed. The floor was bare with only the glue from the tile remaining. It was icky and sticky! Using some of the extra carpet tile from the event center, we finish the entry area. It looks wonderful!
Next, we spent way too long scraping the paint from CLACC's main door #1. Although it was freshly repainted just last year, the door was already terribly scratched. With several layers of paint already on the door, just painting it again seemed like the wrong thing to do. So, we took on the arduous task of removing it all, then primed and painted. It looks great, but unfortunately that door gets a lot of hard use. So, we will be installing an extra large kick plate to protect it. We also repainted one of the doors on 5th street which was two-toned due to a "mix up" in paint. (See what I did there?)
Then, we hit the gym and painted the boards above the doors of the gymnasium lobby. These boards cover a row of windows that haven't seen the light of day for close to 50 years. We are working on a grant to restore the windows to their original glory, but for now the wood looks fresh and new with a new coat of paint. And, I don't believe anyone will miss that green color! While we were there, we glued down the new tile in the gym lobby and installed some new toilet paper dispensers to bring the restrooms into this century.
After that we painted the hallway that runs from the office to the gym hallway, between the dining room and the VFW room. Once the second coat dried, we hung eight pictures which illustrate the history of this area. The pictures were originally produced for the "Between Fences -- A Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition" that CLACC and the Clear Lake Public Library hosted in 2008. Clear Lake was one of six small Wisconsin communities to be chosen to host that prestigious, month-long event. Now, the framed prints are on display again, for all to enjoy. Two museum-esque benches complete the scene, and the hallway looks amazing!
If you would like to volunteer your time and talents to help our community, please reach out! It's more fun than it should be!
