CLACC Floored with Tile Donation

Recently, a tenant at the Clear Lake Area Community Center (CLACC) approached board members about some floor tile that was being disposed of due to the closure of a data center in the cities. The board members immediately began brainstorming potential uses for the floor tiles at CLACC.

The catch? The 10,000 square feet of tiles needed to be moved in less than 24 hours! After considering many options and trying to align borrowed equipment, a 26-foot U-Haul box truck was deemed the best way to move these tiles that weighed about 9 pounds each.

Lots of muscle was needed, so Ray Cress, Tim Wyss and Eric Wood met Wendy Schoggins at the data center in Shoreview, Minn. They loaded up the truck, moving each of the approximately 2,000 tiles by hand. After driving back home, they enlisted the help of a skid loader and pallet jack so that not as much manual labor was needed, and were joined by Ron and Ken Cress who helped the original crew unload and store the tile in the community center.

Many, many thanks to everyone who made possible the donation of this wonderful commercial floor tile. Specifically, Stephanie and Michael "ICE Mike" Thomas, and the whole moving crew. The timing was uncanny, as we just launched our asbestos abatement project which will require two areas to be re-tiled with new flooring. The previous bid for those two floors was approximately $10,000. And best of all, 18,000 pounds of tile did not end up in the landfill.
