Thirty-Three Year Old Roof Replaced

New Roof at CLACC

By Muriel Nelson

Perhaps you saw the activity around  the Clear Lake Area Community Center during the week of June 3 when workers were replacing the old roof. CLACC Board President Tim Wyss reported that despite diligent maintenance, the roof to the 3-story section of the former high school  finally required replacement.

While not a record, it is impressive that the old roof withstood 33 years of sun, rain, snow and whatever else Mother Nature delivered to it all that time. In the last 2 years, 3rd floor tenants experienced occasional ceiling leaks, an indication the aging  roof was wearing out. With the writing on the wall, or in this case, “on the roof”, the board proceeded to obtain bids for replacement of the roof over 3-story brick structure.

Fischer Roofing of Ellsworth, specialists in flat roofing, was awarded the contract. They  replaced the 5200 sf roof within a week using a special vinyl material that lasts longer than rubber or other materials.

The roof replacement is just one of several improvement projects on the docket.  A new HVAC system for the gymnasium wing,  roof replacements for other sections of the complex, a donation center for the growing thrift shop, completion of the asbestos-removal project (the grant obtained covers 80% of the costs), and improvements to the Event Center are on the list, among other needs.

Each project requires funding, and while CLACC searches for grants and other ways to raise the money, donations are also appreciated. For more information on how you can donate, check the website, CLACC.org.

Note – Thanks to Wendy Schoggins, who despite her fear of heights, took the pictures of the new roof!
