Students in Clear Lake will once again have the chance to celebrate our town’s unique connection to this worldwide environmental movement. The 4th Annual Earth Day Poster Contest is sponsored by the Clear Lake Area Community Center and the Clear Lake Lions Club and hosted by Clear Lake Community Education.
Clear Lake holds a special place in environmental history as the hometown of Gaylord Nelson, who served as Governor, state senator, and U.S. Senator, and also founded Earth Day in 1970.
Nelson launched the first Earth Day after being inspired by student-led teach-ins happening on college campuses; he organized a nationwide day of environmental education and action. The event mobilized millions of Americans and helped spark the modern, now worldwide environmental movement.
Today, Clear Lake continues to honor Nelson’s legacy by encouraging young students to think about how they can help care for the planet.
The poster contest is open to Clear Lake students who may submit one original 11-by-17-inch poster using any medium, including paint, crayons, or markers.
This year’s Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlighting how individuals and communities can make a difference through everyday actions.
Posters may focus on topics such as conservation, renewable energy, biking and walking, recycling and composting, sustainable living, and keeping the environment litter-free.
Entries will be judged on creativity, artistic effort, message clarity, and how well they reflect the spirit of Earth Day and environmental stewardship.
A total of 12 prizes will be awarded. Six students will receive cash prizes, and their teacher will also receive a cash award for their classroom (or "community").
All submitted posters will be displayed during Earth Month at the Clear Lake Area Community Center, allowing the public to see the creativity and environmental awareness of local students. Then, winning posters will be displayed throughout the summer at the Clear Lake Museum.
Students interested in participating should look for entry details at school this week. Deadline to enter is Friday, April 10. Winners will be announced at the Earth Day assembly at the Elementary School on April 22, and on Facebook.
