As many may know, the Clear Lake Area Community Center (CLACC) is situated right next to the Clear Lake Heritage Museum. Because of the close proximity, the fact that the museum is closed during the cold winter months and that CLACC itself is a 103-year-old historic building, the Community Center features several collections of wonderful local history. Acting as a teaser for the more robust displays at the museum, CLACC's exhibits include a glass cabinet inside the main door #1, a pictorial display of early logging days, and four built-in display cases.
For more than twenty years, CLACC has been home to an antique printing press, once used to print the Clear Lake Star newspaper. Having spent most of that time in the dining room, the press moved temporarily to the hallway outside when volunteers waxed the cafeteria floor. However, the dining room lift was not strong enough to bring the 3/4 ton press back up the five steps to its original location. For more than two years, strongman Tim Wyss has moved the press back and forth around the hallways to make room for various events, such as the Winter Market.
Tenant, Jacob Blair of Mystic Shapes 3-D Printing (Room 309), attended CLACC's February Board Meeting and realized the need for moving the printing press. Having worked as Operations Manager for Daymakers Moving & Storage, Jacob knew the right people, asked them for a favor, and got the press moved at no charge to the very grateful nonprofit!
On Sunday, March 9, they moved the printing press to its permanent home on the 2nd floor outside the Chronicle office. This crew knew what they were doing and made moving this 1,500-pound hunk of metal look easy.
Quick side note: CLACC is run entirely by volunteers at no cost to taxpayers. Part of its mission is to help small, local businesses by offering affordable rents, and in turn, tenants are asked to pitch in whenever possible. If you would like to get involved, volunteer, or just learn more - drop us a line!
Please join us in thanking Daymakers Moving & Storage and Jacob from Mystic Shapes for their generosity and help.
